The Grollo Group comprises companies dedicated to property
investment and development, building design and construction, tourism,
education and sport.
These companies are built on a tradition of excellence,
honour, community concern and fairness that began with Luigi Grollo
in Melbourne in 1948 and extends to his sons, their wives and his
grandchildren today. Today, the Grollo Group represents the diverse
interests of Rino and Diana Grollo.
OUR HERITAGE
Luigi Grollo arrived at Victoria Dock on 24 July 1928
from the northern Italian town of Treviso. Aged only 18 years and
with no job and no English, Luigi spent his first few years picking
up jobs where he could. He then settled in Melbourne with work as
a concreter. In the late 1940s, Luigi began working for himself
with a small team of men and one truck. Over the next 50 years,
this small business was to grow into one of Australia’s largest
and most successful construction groups.
Beginning with footpaths and building superstructures
in the 1950s, the business moved on to swimming pools and shops
in the 1960s and to shopping centre complexes and commercial buildings
in the 1970s. It was also in the 1970s that the business relocated
its workforce to Darwin for two years to build 400 cyclone-proof
houses.
In the boom years of the1980s, the Grollo business
thrived and the workforce grew to more than 1000. The Grollos combined
construction and property development and ownership, most notably
with Melbourne’s landmark Rialto Towers. The company also
started to make inroads into Sydney, beginning with construction
of the Governor Phillip Tower. It was in the late 1980s that Grocon
was formed as the construction and development arm of the Grollo
Group.
The 1990s were marked by recession and a downturn
in the property market. Through foresight and versatility, Grocon
shifted its focus back to construction and won more major projects,
including the Hyatt hotels and Crown Casino in Melbourne and the
Westin Hotel and No 1 Martin Place in Sydney.
